Many problems can be caused by an exaggerated startle response.

Anxiety. Sufferers can become nervous and hypervigilant about startling.

Avoidance. Sufferers may avoid noisy situations, such as concerts.

Isolation. Sufferers can become socially isolated.

Substance Use. People can use alcohol or drugs to calm their nervous systems.

Poor decision-making. The ability to make good decisions worsens following a startle.

Accidents. The physical reaction can cause danger, such as when driving or due to tripping and falling.

Mental Health Issues. Sufferers are prone to depression, anxiety and eating disorders.
