Many problems can be caused by an exaggerated startle response.

These include the following:

  • Discomfort. It can take up to 20 minutes to recover from a reaction.

  • Anxiety. Sufferers can become nervous and hypervigilant about startling.

  • Avoidance. Sufferers may avoid noisy situations, such as concerts.

  • Isolation. Sufferers can become socially isolated.

  • Substance Use. People can use alcohol or drugs to calm their nervous systems.

  • Poor decision-making. The ability to make good decisions worsens following a startle.

  • Accidents. The physical reaction can cause danger, such as when driving or due to tripping and falling.

  • Mental Health Issues. Sufferers are prone to depression, anxiety and eating disorders.
